Writing is all about expressing yourself through written language. The obvious benefit is that people who are normally sealed off can become more transparent with their feelings. It helps others to understand. But perhaps what’s most beneficial about writing, at least in my eyes, is that writing helps you better understand yourself. It helps you to become more aware of who are as a person and the perceptions of the world you might have known you hold.
For this prompt, I asked my participants to write at the top of a page the word: “Over.” The prompt was simply to write a few minutes on what the word meant to them. I feel that it was a successful attempt to help them decode themselves a bit, through examining their thoughts on such a small word that can carry such heavy connotations.
Here is what I wrote:
“OVER”
It’s funny hows it’s often such small words that can be so grand. Over could mean an end. Could mean finite. It also could be a marker, a mile post. For one thing to begin, the previous must over.
But over can also be above. You go over speed bumps. You go over pot holes. You go over bridges. In this regard, over can lead to something better. It can carry you to the next plan of existence.
That’s the beauty of language, of life. It’s all in how you choose to interpret it. You have the choice of what “over” means to you.
